Capstone Project: Usability Evaluation of PGP Desktop

Abstract

This paper presents research on the installation and use of the PGP email encryption software. Usability testing revealed significant barriers to use that, in a real-world context, would prevent users from correctly finishing the setup and thus from using the product. Based on previous research on usable security, the reduction or elimination of barriers to use is crucial for effective security software. Thus, the authors make suggestions for redesign of the process to facilitate use and encourage adoption.

This paper has been submitted to the 2009 Symposium on Usable Privacy and Security.
